N2 - Mechanisms of COVID-19-induced lung injury involve complex immunopathological events which are currently being elucidated. Studying immune mechanisms at the primary site of injury, i.e. the lower airways, are particularly informative. This review provides a brief introduction to the methods used to perform sampling from the lungs of critically ill patients with COVID-19, key immunopathological findings and a discussion on how immunosuppressants may exert their effects locally.
