As part of the NorthTick project, co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund and the North Sea Region Programme, specialists in the field of tick-borne diseases from seven North Sea countries co-operated with patient organisations and governmental health care institutions to provide this comprehensive overview of diagnostics and treatment recommendations in the region for Lyme borreliosis, Borrelia miyamotoi infection, tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, rickettsiosis, neoehrlichiosis and babesiosis. The main conclusion is that the recommendations in these northern countries are essentially the same, with very few differences. This overview presents the current diagnostics and provides useful clinical guidance.

As part of the NorthTick project on ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBD), co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund and the North Sea Region Programme 2014 – 2020, a comprehensive overview of diagnostics and treatment strategies in the North Sea region was made. Specialists in the field of human TBD from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Scotland (United Kingdom) and the Netherlands were involved, in addition to patient organisations and governmental health care institutions. The full report has been published at the NorthTick project website ( NorthTick Interreg project, 2023 ) The main conclusion is that the diagnostic and treatment strategies are the same in the seven participating countries, despite some minor differences in the choice and duration of antibiotics and their mode of administration - oral or intravenous (IV). We believe that this joint work and recommendation can help health care providers to offer the best possible care and information for patients with assured or suspected TBD.
